Meet Matt Arnett, Author of; The Quilts of Gee’s Bend: Masterpieces from a Lost Place, Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt, Gee’s Bend: The Women and their Quilts, and Mary Bendolph, Gee’s Bend Quilts, and Beyond.
Mr. Arnett and Women of Gee’s Bend will speak candidly about how generations of Gee’s Bend family members have lived in a remote area surrounded on three sides by the bridgeless Alabama River. The miraculous way isolation & poverty produced innovative art. 2-sessions 10AM-12:30PM & 2PM-4:40PM.
The nationally acclaimed Gee's Bend Quilt Collective will be in Pittsburgh to demonstrate their unique heritage quilt-making skills. The women of the collective, who are virtually self-taught, are carrying on a traditional cultural art form passed down generationally since the 19th century.
Also meet Matt Arnett the best selling author of "Gee's Bend: The Women and Their Quilts." He will be available for a book signing and to discuss how "The women living near and around the town of Boykin along County Road 29 in Wilcox County who first made quilts for warmth,” became respected folk artists.
Gee's Bend Quilts have toured some of the most prestigious Museums in the United States including the Denver Art Museum, Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, Museum of Art in Knoxville, Tennessee and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, to name a few.
