James Ivory’s first directorial effort since the death of his producing partner Ismail Merchant is an adaption of Peter Cameron’s 2002 novel about a young literature professor traveling to an isolated Uruguayan estate to convince the family of a dead minor novelist to authorize a proposed biography. Visually impressive, the film’s storyline is framed in a series of handsome, unfussy arrangements that match its languished mood. Interesting characters are showcased throughout the well-scripted film, a gentle, witty tale of love and literature. Featuring Laura Linney, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Anthony Hopkins.
