Video: The Dead Weather – “I Cut Like a Buffalo”

Some really creepy stuff from Jack White’s latest band today. Many of the scenes give off that strange, surreal Inland Empire vibe.

Video: Graham Coxon – “Dead Bees”

Blur guitarist Graham Coxon has had a nice little solo career after his former band’s breakup. This single, off of this year’s The Spinning Top, features the usual Coxon tropes – garagey riffs with a bit of folksy warmth – set to a montage of, er, interesting nature scenes and stop-motion animation. This one isn’t for the squeamish nor the motion-sick.

Video: Dan Deacon – “Paddling Ghost”

Most music-video directors would use a song title like “Paddling Ghost” to create something that represents a metaphor for the human condition. You know, like how we’re all really just ghosts paddling against the current of time, trying to stave off death. But not Dan Deacon. No, his video for “Paddling Ghost” (off of his 2009 release Bromst) is about… a ghost. With a paddle. Oh, and there’s also a skeletal pirate, an alien spaceship, and an instantly-recognizable miniature puppet Dan Deacon. It’s not often that a music video makes me laugh out loud, but this one definitely did so – in a good way.

Video: Jay-Z (feat. Rihanna & Kanye West) – “Run This Town”

And here we have the second video from Jay-Z’s hotly-anticipated 11th album, The Blueprint 3. It’s great to see that Jay hasn’t slowed down with old age, and Rihanna is amazing as always. (Too bad about the minute or so of Kanye, though.) The entire video has a sort of post-apocalyptic “Beyond Thunderdome” asthetic to it, with the trio of artists portrayed – as per the song’s title – as the leaders of a mob of warriors ready to… run a town.

Video: Mew – “Introducing Palace Players”

(NOTA BENE: Because Sony Music are a bunch of big fat jerks who love to disable embedding on music videos, you’ll have to hop on over to Ear Farm to see the video.)

When a new single comes out from Danish experimental rockers Mew, you know that the accompanying video has to be suitably weird. This video for “Introducing Palace Players,” off of the band’s forthcoming album No More Stories, features some bizarre 2001-style artifacts alternating with shots of various plants and animals. But don’t worry, it all connects in the end. Er, sort of. Just watch it and – like Mew’s music – maybe its genius will reveal itself over time.

Video: Modest Mouse – “King Rat”

A while back, news leaked out that the late actor Heath Ledger was in the process of directing a video for alt-rockers Modest Mouse when he passed away. Now, thanks to Stereogum, that video has been released, and it’s everything that the hype made it out to be. The above video for “King Rat” features some nicely-produced animation with a DIY aesthetic, as well as a twisted storyline. (Be warned: Some of the imagery may be a little graphic.) Enjoy!

Video: Busta Rhymes – “World Go Round (feat. Estelle)”

After two decades in the hip-hop game, Busta Rhymes has a well-deserved reputation for releasing irreverent, well-produced, and just plain cool music videos. This one doesn’t disappoint in any of those regards: whoever they snagged to do the visual design and computer animation really plays off of Busta’s lyrics well. Add in plenty of footage of the lovely Estelle, and you’ve got one of the better hip-hop videos I’ve seen this year. Please don’t quit any time soon, Busta.

Video: Datarock – “True Stories”

Hailing from the icy fields and fjords of Norway, post-punk revivalists Datarock have produced some sweet, danceable music over the course of three albums. This artsy video for the Talking Heads-esque single, “True Stories,” features some trippy high-contrast shots spliced with footage of the band taking on an almost Devo-like stage persona. It’s pretty cool, but not quite as cool as a Norwegian winter.

Video: Holy Ghost! – “I Will Come Back”

Very seldom does a song/video combo make me want to just crank up the volume on my laptop, leave my desk chair, and start dancing the heck out. This video by electronica duo Holy Ghost! manages to not only do just that, but also make me really hungry for pizza. (Oh, and the similarities to a certain other video aren’t just coincidental.) Enjoy!

Video: Cornershop – “Who Fingered Rock ‘N’ Roll”

In 1997, Britpop band Cornershop released “Brimful of Asha,” one of the more bizarre hit singles to appear on ’90s alt-rock radio. Though it’d be easy to dismiss the band as a one-hit wonder on that basis, they’ve actually released several albums worth of quality, Indian-influenced pop-rock. This video for the latest single off of the band’s upcoming album, Judy Sucks a Lemon for Breakfast, features a series of archived pieces of footage strung together by Esteban Gillon. (Oh, and the song rocks, too.) Look for the full album to hit next week.
